Eye Strain From Screens? Try These 5 Eye Relaxing Exercises Now!

Just like any part of our body, we also need to take care of our eyes. From consuming proper nutrition to exercising them regularly – such activities can protect your vision. You may experience eye strain from screens due to the prolonged usage of digital devices. Given that we can no longer imagine our lives without mobile phones or laptops, it becomes all the more important to give your eyes a break!

However, as people are working from home and trying to stay productive, it can be easy to get neglectful. Thus, we will talk about how you can alleviate eye strain from screens through simple eye relaxing exercises. Let’s check them out:


Palming is the best way to overcome eye strain from screens.

Rub your palms together to get them warm. Next, cup your palms and place them over your closed eyes. Let your eyes enjoy the warm compress and relax.


The lack of blinking could lead to “Dry Eyes Syndrome.”

Thus, to prevent your eyes from drying out and get scratchy, make a conscious decision to blink often. Look away from the screen and stare at a blank wall. Then, slowly close your eyes and keep them closed for about a second. Now open the again. Do this for at least 20 times to lubricate your eyes.

Eye Rolling

Even though eye-rolling is considered rude, it is actually a great way to reduce eye strain from screens! Plus, it works on strengthening your eye muscles.

Relax your shoulders and close your eyes. Try to look to your right, then roll your eyes to look towards the sky. Next, look to your left and then roll them to look at the ground. Your eyes should follow a circular trail. Repeat this exercise in the opposite direction.

Do this at least ten times, twice a day.

Eye Press

In this exercise, you use your fingers to help your eyes relax.

Close your eyes, relax your shoulders, and take a deep breath. Place your fingers on your eyelids and apply gentle pressure on your eyes. Hold this position for 10 seconds. Remove your hands and open your eyes. Wait until your vision is back in focus, blink if necessary. Do the eye press once again, about nine more times.


Another likely reason for eye strain from screens is how close we hold them to our eyes. Ideally, we must maintain a 20-inch to 40-inch distance between our eyes and a laptop or desktop monitor. But how many of us actually follow that? For these users, Zooming is the best eye exercise.

Sit on a chair. Relax your shoulder and keep your spine erect. Extend your arm outside in front of you and give a thumbs up. Focus on the thumb. Slowly bend your elbow to bring the thumb closer to your eye. Continue to track this motion with your eyes. Then take your thumb away from the eyes. Do this ten times, twice a day.

BONUS: The 20-20-20 Rule.

The 20-20-20 rule is the best way to avoid eye strain from screens. It states that for every 20 minutes that you spend looking at a screen, you must stare at an object placed 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
